What are the 10 causes of air pollution
The 10 causes of air pollution are as follows:
Air pollution is caused by both natural and man-made causes. Man-made causes are more responsible. Natural factors that are responsible for air pollution include volcanic eruptions, wind erosion, forest fires, pollen scattering, natural radioactivity and evaporation of organic compounds. The following are the 10 main causes of air pollution :
- Stationary source: These include power plants, various manufacturing plants, various types of reactors, fuel heating devices, waste incinerators, etc. These produce large amounts of smoke, which is a major cause of air pollution in developing and poor countries. Burning wood, crop wastes and dung also causes a lot of air pollution.
- Mobile source: This includes motor vehicles, ships, aircraft, etc. These cause air pollution as well as noise pollution. These vehicles emit carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and toxic gas. CO is also produced by incomplete combustion of natural gas, coal or wood.
- Gases emitted from paints, hair sprays, aerosol sprays, varnishes and other such solvents pollute the air.
- Wherever there is waste, it is one of the major causes of air pollution. Developing or poor countries do not have adequate waste disposal systems, leading to the accumulation of waste in the vicinity of settlements. These produce methane gas. Methane is a toxic and highly flammable gas that can form explosive mixtures with air. Incomplete combustion of methane again produces carbon monoxide which is another toxic gas.
- Military source: Toxic gases from military warfare, civil war, nuclear weapons, rockets, etc. are released into the air and cause air pollution.
- Fires are another major cause of air pollution.
- Radon gas from radioactive decay in the Earth's crust is another cause of air pollution. This radioactive gas is produced from the decay of radium metal. Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas. It is very dangerous for health. Radon gas can accumulate in buildings, especially in confined areas such as basements. Radon gas is considered to be the second leading cause of lung cancer.
- On hot days, plants emit significant amounts of environmentally significant VOCs in some areas. These VOCs react with primary anthropogenic pollutants such as NOx, SO2, etc. to form secondary pollutants which cause air pollution. This is one of the natural causes of air pollution.
- Volcanic activity which produces sulfur, chlorine and ash particulate.
- Dust from a large area or land without vegetation is another major cause of air pollution.
Air pollution can only be prevented if individuals and businesses stop using toxic substances. For this, everyone has to come forward. We need to make rules and apply them strictly to private and industrial organizations.
